Suet Sandwich

The Suet Sandwichis a great innovation to allow woodpecker enthusiasts to feed quality, nutritious suet to woodpeckers without inviting aggressive mobs of European Starlings, an introduced species that outcompetes the native woodpeckers for nesting sites, or squirrels with their big appetite.

The Suet Sandwich outperforms standard suet feeders, including upside-down suet feeders and feeders with woodpecker tail props. Suet feeders with tail props are more comfortable for woodpeckers, though they find the smooth wood difficult to grip, but pose no challenge to starlings and squirrels. Starlings and squirrels quickly figure a way around upside-down suet feeders, even those hanging with the benefit of a squirrel baffle. Unfortunately, many birders resort to using plain fat suet or lard to discourage these pests, but it contains only empty calories.

The Suet Sandwich solves these problems. The suet within the two sides of wood can only be used by birds with long tongues (the woodpeckers) and features large surfaces areas made from bark, the woodpeckers' preferred landing. Starlings are occasionally able to access suet that is on the edges of the suet sandwich, but they can't reach very deeply and give up soon enough. I strongly recommend this product - it's a big cut above the rest of the suet feeders I've tried.

On the left of the page you can see a female hairy woodpecker feeding from my suet sandwich. I drilled two holes in the suet holder in order to screw it on the wood pole. Above a squirrel feeder and on a pole, the squirrels have no hope of getting the woodpecker food. In my suburban setting, I feed at least 2 hairy woodpeckers (a male and a female) and what I would estimate to be a half dozen downy woodpeckers.

You can easily make you own suet by combining fat, peanut butter, etc. Many suet recipes are available on the web.
